IDENTITY

Adolescent Development of Identity and Morality

Development of identity is something that is very important, but can also be a struggle for many. As educators, we need to be advocates for the positive development of identity, that goes beyond liking a brand. To do so, I feel it is also important to advocate that being different can be hard, but the most important thing is to be your authentic self because that is who people will genuinely like, and that is what will matter most when adolescence is over.

Mayim Bialik, a scientist and actor on The Big Bang Theory, has a vlog that she uses to talk about issues she is facing. In the video below, she discusses how it can be hard to be different, how society can be very influential on identity, and the implication of the recent trend of "geek-chic." Showing something like this is one of my classrooms would hopefully be somewhat inspirational in the development of personal identity.
